How to apply? Follow these steps

1. Parents: Create a myDSHA account

You will create a user ID and password by clicking on the "New User Registration" button when prompted. All user IDs should be created by the parent.

2. Parents: Complete parent application

Use the admissions checklist in the parent myDSHA account to access the application.

When submitting the application, parents will be asked to submit an application fee using a credit card.

Application fee waiver codes are available upon request.
3. Students: Write your essay
If you are taking the entrance exam at DSHA: there will be time to write your essay during the test.

If you are NOT taking the entrance exam at DSHA:
- download and print the essay prompt from the admissions checklist and handwrite your essay (if you do not have access to a printer, please visit DSHA where hard copies are available).
- Scan or take a picture of your written essay and upload to this checklist.
- PLEASE NOTE: only one file upload is supported; if you have more than one file, please email to the DSHA Admissions Office.
4. Parents + Students: Register for the entrance exam

Use the admissions checklist in the parent myDSHA account to register for the entrance exam.

As part of the admissions application, your daughter must take the entrance exam. DSHA uses the High School Placement Test (HSPT) and will administer this on Friday, November 6, or Saturday, November 7.

If your daughter plans to take the HSPT at another high school, she does NOT need to take it at DSHA. Using the registration form, please let us know where she will take the exam so DSHA can request her scores.

5. Parents + Students: Request teacher recommendation forms

Use the admissions checklist in the parent myDSHA account to request the forms.
6. Parents + Students: Check your work!

In the parent myDSHA account, make sure all checklist items have been completed by November 8. Teacher recommendations are due by November 15.

Should I talk to my teacher before requesting a recommendation?

Yes! We recommend you have a conversation with your math and ELA teacher before sending the recommendation request. Be sure to ask for their correct email address--you will need this when sending the recommendation request.
My math and ELA teacher are the same; is that okay for the recommendation?

Yes! The math and ELA recommendation forms are different and ask different questions, so it's okay if the same teacher completes both.
Why are the teacher recommendations due a week after the application is due?

Should your daughter's teachers receive the request on, or near, the application due date, we want to ensure they have sufficient time to complete the form.

Entrance Exam

Q. What's on the entrance exam?

DSHA uses the Scholastic Testing Service's High School Placement Test (HSPT). There are five components on the test: verbal, math, quantitative, reading, and language. Topics covered include vocabulary, grammar usage, spelling, reading comprehension, basic math and arithmetic skills, and quantitative skills.

No calculator.

Each test is timed, so make sure you work quickly and efficiently on each question. There is no penalty for skipping a question or answering a question incorrectly.

The test is all multiple choice. There are no essays or short answer questions.
Q. What is the schedule for the entrance exam?
- Student Schedule | Check-in is between 8-8:15 a.m. Testing will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and will conclude by 12:15 p.m.; during this time students will also write their admissions essay.
- Parent Schedule | There will be a coffee and Q&A around 8:15 a.m. when students begin testing.
Q. What are some entrance exam tips?

Be sure to get lots of sleep and eat breakfast before you take the test! Be confident in the academic preparation you have received thus far in elementary and middle school.

It's an exam to show us what you know, so do not worry! You are prepared!
Q. What do I need for the entrance exam?

All your daughter needs to bring is a pencil—that’s it!

There will be a brief break in between testing. Your daughter is welcome to bring snacks with her if she would like.
Q. Does my daughter need to take the entrance exam at multiple schools?

DSHA applicants can take the test at DSHA, or at another high school that uses the HSPT.

If applicants took the HSPT at another high school, they should NOT take the exam again at DSHA.

If applicants took the HSPT elsewhere, they should let DSHA know where they took it so DSHA can request test results.
