Awards & Recognition

Sportswoman of the Year Award

The Sportswoman of the Year Award has been a tradition at DSHA since 1955. This award is chosen by the senior class and is given to the person in the graduating class whom they feel represents their class as the best athlete.
 
This year’s recipient is Helena Cesarz, DSHA '23.  Helena earned 8 varsity letters in volleyball, basketball, and track and field during her DSHA career. During her freshman year, she played Freshman Volleyball and Freshman Basketball. The spring season was cancelled due to COVID-19. During her sophomore year, Helena played JV Volleyball, Varsity Basketball, and participated in Track & Field. The basketball team won the WIAA Regional Championship and the WIAA Sectional Runner-Up that year. In track and field, Helena was named third team All-Conference in the shot-put conference relays and was named third team All-Conference in the shot put at the Conference Championship. She also helped the Track & Field team win the WIAA Regional Championship. Junior year, Helena again participated in Varsity Volleyball, Basketball, and Track and Field. In volleyball, she helped her team win the WIAA Regional Championship and the WIAA Sectional Runner-Up. In basketball, she was named a team captain and helped secure the WIAA Regional Championship. She was also named a team captain on the Varsity Track & Field team. During her senior year, Helena played Varsity Volleyball where her team won the GMC Conference Championship, WIAA Regional Championship, WIAA Sectional Championship, and the WIAA D1 State Championship! Helena also played Varsity Basketball where she was named a team captain and helped lead her team to a WIAA Regional Championship. She finished her high school career participating in Track and Field where she was named captain of the team and holds the Indoor school record in the shot put. She also earned 3rd team All-Conference in the Indoor shot put, 3rd Team All-Conference in the discus relay, and 3rd team All-Conference outdoor in the shot put. Outdoor, she is ranked #2 All-Time in DSHA Track and Field History in the shot put, which is the farthest throw in DSHA history since 1988!
 
Helena was also a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Council both her junior and senior year and served as President of the council her senior year. She was also a Greater Metro Conference Scholar-Athlete her junior and senior years. Helena will attend Northwestern University this fall.

The Coaches' Award

The Coaches Award has been a tradition since 1989 and is voted on by the DSHA Varsity Coaches. It is presented to the athlete who has demonstrated sportsmanship, leadership, a good work ethic, and desire in practice and game situations.
 
This year’s recipient is Meg Dorrington, DSHA ‘23. Meg competed in basketball and soccer all four years of her DSHA career and earned 5 varsity letters. Freshman year, Meg played basketball until the spring soccer season was cancelled due to COVID. Sophomore year, Meg played JV Basketball and Varsity Soccer where she helped her team win the GMC Conference Championship, WIAA Regional Championship, WIAA Sectional Championship, and the WIAA State Championship.  During her junior year, Meg played Varsity Basketball and Soccer. In basketball, she helped her team win the WIAA Regional Championship. In soccer, she helped her team win the WIAA Regional Championship, WIAA Sectional Championship, and the WIAA State Runner-Up title. Senior year, Meg again played both Varsity Basketball and Soccer. In basketball, she helped her team win the WIAA Regional Championship. Meg finished her high school career playing Varsity Soccer where she was named a team captain and helped her team secure the GMC Conference championship, WIAA Regional Championship, and the WIAA Sectional Championship. The team qualified for the WIAA State Championship and competed in the WIAA State Semi-Final game.
 
Meg was also named a Greater Metro Conference Scholar Athlete her junior and senior year and demonstrated great leadership skills. She truly exemplifies all of the attributes the Coaches Award is looking to acknowledge. Meg will attend St. Louis University and will play club soccer. 


2023 Volleyball State Champions

On November 2, DSHA took on River Falls in the quarter-finals and won 25-11, 25-6, 25-12.  On November 3, the Dashers took on Sussex Hamilton in the semi-final match and defeated them 25-16, 25-20, 25-7 to advance to the WIAA D1 State Championship match on November 4.

The Dashers faced Oconomowoc, 2022 state runners-up. The team came out on fire and won the first set 25-14, however Oconomowoc found their stride and took the next two sets 20-25, 25-27.  DSHA came back to win the fourth set 25-22 to set up the fifth and deciding set.

The Dashers were not to be denied and won the final set 15-8 to capture the D1 State Championship for the second year in a row – the fifth in school history and the first back-to-back titles since 2014 and 2015. This is the third title under head coach Caitie Ratkowski. Congratulations to the team!

2023 Golf State Champions

The Varsity Golf team competed in the D1 State Championship at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona on October 9 and 10. The field of 12 teams played 18 holes each day. After the first day, DSHA was tied for second place with Waunakee with a score of 325 and was just one stroke out of first place going into day two. The second day, the Dashers came to play and shot a 316 which was two strokes better than Waunakee to win the D1 State Championship! This is the first State Golf Championship in school history!  It took a total team effort to pull off the upset and each golfer did what they needed to do to make the championship possible.

Ava Roesch, DSHA '26, finished 6th overall as an individual with a 76 and 75 for a 151.  Zoe Gryniewicz, DSHA '27, finished tied for 12th and Kate Krueger, DSHA '24, tied for 19th. Hannah Strachota, DSHA '25, shot even par on the front 9 holes the second day and dropped 7 strokes off her day one score and tied for 28th place. Kate Krueger was our last golfer in and shot birdie-par-birdie on the last three holes to secure the two stroke win for the Dashers!  

We also want to recognize Emma Bruckman, DSHA '24, who placed 65th and Rachel Morris, DSHA '25, for their contributions all season long and for being great teammates!

Congratulations on a fantastic season and an even better post-season and DSHA’s FIRST State Golf Championship! Always remember “With God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26. Congratulations!

2023 State Doubles Tennis

The doubles team of Molly Jex, DSHA '24, and Lizzie Stuckslager, DSHA '26, competed in the WIAA Individual Tennis State Championship on October 12, 13, and 14 at the Nielsen Stadium on the UW Madison campus.

Molly and Lizzie, who were the #1 seed and defending State Champions, won the State Championship again in style only dropping 7 games the entire tournament and beat Middleton 6-1, 6-2 to win the State Championship in the final match.  This capped a 22-0 undefeated season for the Doubles Team.  Congratulations on your back-to-back State Doubles Championship!

2023 Ski State Champions

Special congratulations to the DSHA Varsity Ski team on finishing in FIRST place at the Wisconsin State High School Downhill Ski State Championship and bringing home the state championship trophy! This is the fourth state championship in the last six years. The team finished 2nd overall in the Slalom, 5th overall in the GS, and 1st overall in the Super G to win the state championship. In the overall combined individual scores, Payton Bradford, DSHA '24, finished in 2nd place overall as an individual and qualified for nationals! In the individual Slalom, Bradford placed second and Riley Doerr, DSHA '26, placed 9th; in the GS individual Bradford placed 3rd overall; and in the Super G  Bradford placed 5th overall and Doerr placed 9th overall. Congratulations to all of the team members: Doerr, Emily Peterson, DSHA '26, Anne Klaus, DSHA '25, Bradford, Mack Doerr, DSHA '23, Piper Dupies, DSHA '23, and Joan Barry, DSHA '23. We are so proud of each of you! In addition, the JV team placed 2nd at the conference championship on Thursday, February 23 at Sunburst. Congratulations! We are really proud of all of our ski team members!

2022 Volleyball State Champions

The DSHA Varsity Volleyball team finished their season on a high note making their first appearance at the WIAA State Championship since 2017. On November 3, DSHA took on Middleton in the quarter-finals and won 25-9, 25-13, 25-18. The school also sold the most tickets to this match and won the “Run to the Resch” competition bringing home a check for $1,000.00!  On November 4, the Dashers took on Appleton North in the semi-final match and defeated them 25-23, 25-17, 25-14 to advance to the WIAA D1 State Championship match on November 5. The Dashers faced the defending state champions who had only lost one match all year (to DSHA). The team came out on fire and won the first two sets 25-16, 25-16; however Oconomowoc found their stride and took the next two sets 18-25, 18-25 to set up the 5th and deciding set. The set went back and forth until the Dashers pulled ahead and won 15-13 to capture the D1 State Championship – the fourth in school history and the first since back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.  This is the second title under head coach Caitie Ratkowski. Congratulations to the team! We are so very proud of you!
 

2022 Tennis Doubles Champions

The DSHA Varsity Tennis team sent singles players Carolyn Schaefer, DSHA '24, and Madi Guillermo, DSHA '25 and the doubles team of  Joan Barry, DSHA '23, and Kelly Coury, DSHA '23, as well as Molly Jex, DSHA '24, and Lizzie Stuckslager, DSHA '26 to the WIAA Individual Tennis State Championship on October 13, 14, and 15 at the Nielsen Stadium on the UW Madison campus. Schaeger finished 7/8th in the singles tournament and Jex and Stuckslager who were seeded 4th WON the Doubles Championship! What a great accomplishment! Congratulations!





2022 Field Hockey State Champions

The DSHA Varsity Field Hockey team wrapped up their regular seasons on October 6 and finished their season 12-0 to win the conference championship!  This is the FIRST undefeated field hockey season in school history! The team then moved on to the Wisconsin High School Field Hockey Association State Tournament. The first round of the tournament began on Monday, October 10 and DSHA had a bye. The team then moved on to the semi-finals on Wednesday, October 12 at Uihlein Soccer Park and defeated University School Milwaukee 5-0 to move on to the championship game on Saturday, October 15 at Uihlein Soccer Park.  They defeated Arrowhead 4-0 to capture the WHSFA State Championship!  It was a record-breaking season! Congratulations!

2022 Spring Rugby Wins Nationals!

The rugby team traveled to Notre Dame College in Ohio to compete in the Single School National Rugby Invitational Championships. The Dashers took on Wando High School from South Carolina in the quarter-finals on Saturday, May 21 and won 30-0. Later that day, they competed against Eagle High School from Idaho in the semi-finals and won 19-7. This put the team into the Championship game on Sunday, May 22 against Summit High School out of Breckinridge, Colorado. The team played a great game and defeated Summit 15-5 to bring home the Single School National Invitational Championship! Congratulations to the players and coaches on another fine season.



Field Hockey wins Second State Championship in two years!

The field hockey teams wrapped up their regular seasons on October 10th. The Varsity team finished their season in First place with a conference record of 7-1. The Varsity then moved on to the State tournament. The first round of the tournament began on Monday, October 14 and DSHA had a bye. The team then moved on to the semi-finals on Wednesday, October 14 at Uihlein Soccer Park and defeated Arrowhead 4-0 which advanced the team into the State Championship game at Hart Park on Saturday, October 17. The team faced a tough University School Milwaukee and won 3-2 in a well fought battle! Congratulations to all of the players and coaches on a historic season and the second State Championship for DSHA in Field Hockey!

Kathryn Kleczka wins WIAA D1 Diving State Championship

Junior Kathryn Kleczka won the WIAA Sectional and then went on to compete in the WIAA Division 1 State Diving Championship meet on Saturday, November 14 at Waukesha South High School. After finishing 14thas a freshman and 7th as a sophomore, Kathryn WON the Division 1 State Diving Championship with a score of 423.95 points.  She is the FIRST diver in DSHA history to win the WIAA D1 State Diving Championship!  Congratulations to Kathryn and her coach, Herman Acevedo, on achieving this historic accomplishment! 

2019 TRACK & FIELD STATE CHAMPION – JADIN O'BRIEN, DSHA '20

Jadin was the 2019 Division 1 Champion in the 100 meter hurdles with a winning time of 13.91.  She was also the 2019 Division 1 Champion in the 300 meter hurdles with a winning time of 42.34. This is the second year Jadin has earned state titles!

2019 RUGBY NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

The rugby team traveled to Denver, Colorado to compete in the Single School National Rugby Invitational Championships.  The Dashers took on Palmer, Colorado in the quarter-finals on Saturday, May 18 and won 54-0. Later that day, they competed against Grandville, Michigan in the semi-finals and won 74-3.  This put the team into the Championship game on Sunday, May 19 against Catholic Memorial.  The team played a great game and defeated Catholic Memorial 25-10 to bring home the Single School National Invitational Championship!  Congratulations!



Back to Back Ski State Champions

The Varsity Ski team won the 2018 and 2019 WIARA High School Downhill Ski State Championships! The back to back championships are the first and second Ski State Championship in school history!

In 2018, Freshman Abby Horning placed fourth overall as an individual and first in the slalom. Abby Horning and Alex Nonn qualified for Nationals and Sydney Bartos and Isabel Ullrich were named alternates for Nationals. Congratulations to the other team members not previously mentioned: Halle Quadracci, Sydney Bartos, Michelle Horning and Meghan Quadracci. 

In 2019, Slalom run Abby Horning finished in third place, Alex Nonn finished in seventh place and Michelle Horning finished in 9th place overall. In the Super G run Abby Horning finished fifth and Alex Nonn finished ninth overall.  In the overall combined scores Alex Nonn finished seventh, Michelle Horning finished ninth and Abby Horning finished eleventh overall. Congratulations to all of the team members:  Freshman Sarah Bradford, Katie Delcore and Kate Nonn, Sophomores Abby Horning and Halle Quadracci, Junior Alex Nonn,  and Senior Michelle Horning!  We are so proud of each of you!  In addition, the JV team finished second in the Conference Championship race on February 21. Meghan Quadracci finished first in Giant Slalom and Mary Kate Denton and Quinn Dupies finished first and second respectively in Slalom.  Congratulations!  We are really proud of all of our ski team members this season!
Jordan Schifano wins State and Selected Journal Sentinel Tennis Player of the Year!
Senior Jordan Schifano finished her high school tennis career as the WIAA Division 1 State Singles Champion with an overall record of 34-1! This is the first time DSHA has had a Singles State Champion since 2004. She won the title in exciting fashion beating the player from Badger in a thrilling 3 set match 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Jordan was also named the 2019-20 Journal Sentinel High School Tennis Player of the Year at their annual High School Sports Awards.  Jordan will continue her tennis career at Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville.
Field Hockey wins First State Championship!
The Varsity Field Hockey team peaked at the right time!  After earning the fourth seed in the state tournament, the first round began on Monday, October 14. The varsity defeated University Lake School 6-0. The team then moved on to the semi-finals on Thursday, October 17 at top-seeded Brookfield Academy and pulled the upset with a 1-0 victory to propel them into the State Championship game at Hart Park on Saturday, October 19. The team faced a tough Arrowhead team and was tied 1-1 in regulation to send them into two scoreless overtime periods which led to a shootout to decide the game. The shootout went five deep before Junior Jordan Bonk put in the winning penalty shot to secure the State Championship! The win marked the first State Championship for DSHA in Field Hockey!

2017 Rugby National Champions

The DSHA rugby team captured an impressive 15th straight win at the Midwest Rugby Tournament in the spring of 2017. They advanced to compete in the Single School National Rugby Championships May 20 and 21 held in Elkhart, Indiana. The Dashers took on McMinn in the quarter-finals on Saturday and won 27-12. Later that day, they competed against Orchard Park, New York in the semi-finals and won 41-5 to advance to the Championship game on Sunday. The team defeated Kahuku, Hawaii 6-0 in a hard fought game. Congratulations!

2017 Track & Field State Champion – Jadin O'Brien, DSHA '20

Jadin was the 2017 Division 1 Champion in the 300 meter hurdles with a winning time of 43.22.

2016 Cross Country State Champion – Meghan Scott, DSHA '18

Meghan Scott, DSHA '18 is the first DSHA cross country runner to win the WIAA Individual State Championship in school history! Meghan won the WIAA Division 1 race with a time of 18:10.46.

DSHA Athletic Hall Of Fame

The DSHA Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes and honors exceptional DSHA student-athletes and individuals who have had a positive impact on our athletic program. Since the inception of interscholastic high school athletic opportunities for girls in 1972, DSHA has had a rich history of outstanding athletes. The Athletic Hall of Fame honors those who have significantly impacted our athletic success. It serves to inspire current and future athletes and individuals to strive for excellence.
